Area filmmakers spotlight those on autism spectrum for ReelAbilities Columbus festival

When central Ohio filmmaker Matt Swift was in his early 20s, he learned something about the world of the disabled.
Swift was a student at Ohio State University at the time, and while working at a campus-area pizza restaurant, he experienced repetitive strain injuries that affected both arms permanently.
“It eventually got to the point where I had to do a lot of therapy,” said Swift, now 42. “I registered with Disability Services at OSU to be able to finish my undergrad.”
Due to the physical limitations that resulted from the injuries, Swift was forced to abandon his dream of working on film crews in Hollywood, but the episode instilled a long-term interest in the experiences of the disabled.

‘Those Who Spring of Me’ and the many obstacles of indie filmmaking

Matt and Nikki Swift recount the many challenges of making a big-screen drama about an autistic couple. The movie premieres virtually on Wednesday via the ReelAbilities Film Festival.
“Those Who Spring of Me” is a fictional drama, but during the filming process, directors Matt and Nikki Swift wondered if the film would become a documentary instead.
“We had four cameras running at all times, and the fourth camera was a documentary camera, because we had no idea if the film was actually going to be usable when we started out,” Matt said.
“Every single day, we would get done, and I would look at it and be like, ‘Man, this footage is dark.’ Or, ‘The audio doesn’t sound right. I don’t know if I can fix that,’” Nikki said.

The work of a pair of Ohio State alumni will now be featured on the virtual big screen.
“Those Who Spring of Me” — a film about a couple on the autism spectrum — will be shown virtually Wednesday. The film was written by local psychologist Dr. Audrey Todd and directed by married couple and Ohio State alumni Matt and Nicolette Swift as part of the ReelAbilities Film Festival in Columbus.
The festival originated at the Jewish Community Center in Manhattan, New York, and features films by and about people with disabilities, according to the festival’s website. The festival was established in Columbus by Arts Possible Ohio, a state agency for arts and disabilities, Megan Fitze, the agency’s director of programs, said.
