Digital Projects

Throughout my educational and occupational careers I have had the pleasure of participating in and managing various digitization projects. The first project that I was able to lend a hand to is the Huntington Archive. The Huntington Archive began as a photo archive with thousands of photographic prints made available by John and Susan Huntington. Now the archive is the largest collection of art- historical images available at no charge on the web. For more information about the Huntington Archive please visit their website through the link provided on the right- hand side.

During the beginning semester of my Master’s at Kent State University’s School of Library and Information Science I was contacted by my undergraduate advisor from Ohio State University about creating an image storage and retrieval system. Douris Inc. is the company that now owns and operates services involved with access to classic movies on film as well as print materials that span over 70 years of cinematic history. To fill the needs of Douris Inc. it was decided that I would produce a 50 image test run that involved: scanning 8" X 10" (or smaller) printed objects, making digital derivatives, generating appropriate administrative and object level metadata, and providing a storage and retrieval test using Greenstone Open Source software.

As part of my Master’s Culminating Experience Project I volunteered my services at the Columbus Museum of Art. Due to my experience and the museum's current needs, a decision was made to pursue a digitization project as the major focus of my project. This project entailed several stages: setting up a portable photographic studio in the museum's library, gathering the art works that would be digitized, digitally photographing each work without taking it out of its frame, processing the images to provide straight and cropped derivatives, and delivering the masters and derivatives to museum staff. Once delivered the images were installed into the asset management system and will become part of educational websites.

Below is a video that describes the use of Greenstone Digital Library Software for digital collections. Within the video three digital libraries and their functionality are demonstrated to provide visual examples of the work I have accomplisheed in this area.
